Superman Returns (Two-Disc Special Edition) (2006)

If Richard Donner's 1978 feature film Superman: The Movie made us believe that a man could fly, Bryan Singer, 2006 follow-up, Superman Returns, we can remember that a superhero movie can make our spirits soar. Superman (played by newcomer Brandon Routh) returns to Earth after a futile search for five years on his home planet of Krypton destroyed. As alter ego Clark Kent, he is eager to return to work at the Daily Planet and see Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth). Laws, however, has changed: now has a boyfriend (James Marsden), a son (Tristan Leabua), and the Pulitzer Prize for his article In addition to Curveball "Why the World Does not Need Superman." emotional, his old rival, Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) is the largest plot of land grab in history.

Singer, who made a strong impression among comic book fans for his work on X-Men franchise and directed Spacey in The Usual Suspects, brings both a fresh perspective and a sense of respect for the old hero of the world. He borrows John Williams great theme music and the voice of Marlon Brando as Jor-El, and the story (written by Singer X-Men collaborators Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris) is a sequence of sort-of the first two films in the franchise (choosing to ignore the third and fourth movies ever happened). The humorous and romantic elements give the movie a heart, Singer art-deco Metropolis is often breathtaking, and special effects are elegant and spectacular, including a disaster an early set piece. Of the vote, Routh is excellent as the dual Superman / Clark, Spacey is both funny and nasty as Luthor and Parker Posey gets the best lines as Luthor Kitty Moll. But at 23 Bosworth seems too young to Lois-five years ago, gray.

It's nice to see Noel Neill, Jack Larson (two classic adventures of Superman TV series), and Eva Marie Saint on the screen too. Superman Returns is one of the projects were in development for seemingly forever, but it was worth the wait - it's more enjoyable Superhero movie since Spider-Man 2 and The Incredibles. - David Horiuchi

On DVD

The publication of two discs containing approximately three hours of documentaries and other features. "Requiem for Krypton: Making Superman Returns" is an eight-part documentary on the film that goes back to Bryan Singer, see the film in 2004. There are many pictures on the set and the analysis of special effects and stunts, such as theft of Brandon Routh (helped by his system of swimming), which focuses more on the process of shooting than design. For example, we see how the scenes were filmed Metropolis, but not how often striking sets were designed. Marlon Brando appears briefly in the section of failures and "Resurrecting Jor-El" highlights the techniques used to create his shots. The eleven deleted scenes (about 15 minutes total) contains nothing earth shattering, but it is nice to see more of Eva Marie Saint, a scene of Clark back to Smallville, which could have changed the dynamics of his return at the Daily Planet, and a scene between Kevin Spacey and Parker Posey is good for a laugh. - David Horiuchi

Superman Birthright #1-12 (2003) (Digital)

Since its inception in 1938, Superman has become one of the most recognized fictional characters in existence. Now get ready for a fresh version of Superman, courtesy of the team in place between two talented comic book ... Imagine Superman started again and have read the first adventures of the Man of Steel - but reinvented from top to bottom to reflect the world today and the sensitivity of today. Birthright is, is the story of Superman - from Krypton to Metropolis (through Smallville!) And beyond. Master scribe Mark Waid shows his love and knowledge of the mythology of Superman, while Leinil Francis Yu elegant illustrations bring history to life.

Superman Returns The Man of Steel is back, but was it worth the trip?

This must be frustrating to be the superhero of the most emblematic of the known universe, but also be the laughingstock of the world from video games. But like any Superman game before it's a sandwich Superman Kryptonite. Where exactly is the Atari 2600 Superman game is still the best ever?

Big Blue Boy Scout is absolutely stacked with forces from the start: super strength, heat vision, freeze breath - it works. You have no life bar. You are indestructible - why would you need? Instead, that's life, bar wisely assigned city itself - do not take damage, but your beloved city can.

Best of all, you can fly, easily the best feature Superman Returns'. Hover in the skies of Metropolis is just as breathtaking as it is fun. Flying over the beautiful landscape - at least on 360, PS2 and Xbox versions are looking long in the tooth - you will hear your trademark cape waving in the wake of your incredible speed. After "Kabloom!" to break the sound barrier, you get ready for the biggest game of Superman all the time.

Unfortunately, this is good as it gets. Superman Returns is about as free-roaming, open, and going to the grocery store, without food. You can fly around all you want, but you can not really spend a lot. More than rushing to be part of a pre-arranged, but largely useless, the main story of events that appear in places on the map every so often, the only activity offered by a futile search to find 100-Quest, glowing cats.

Superman Returns [Music from the Motion Picture] [Enhanced, Soundtrack]

1978 John Williams Superman theme remains one of the most famous of the 70s, so it is both obvious and a little strange that it would feature so prominently in the score for Superman Returns: Why director Bryan Singer and composer John Ottman so willfully compare themselves to the movies soon? Not only a turbocharged version of Williams theme ("Main Titles") opens the album, but "Behind the Scenes: Superman Returns Score" featurette, which is part of the section CD bonus offers improved performance with the orchestra on the theme 1978. Ottman own work has to take place in the shadow of Williams, which is a bit unfair because, while the new score is not revolutionary, it offers all the glory, triumph, and vaguely atmospheric choirs that are now rigor in Hollywood action movies.

Ottman, of course, is used for the treatment of superheroes (who wrote the soundtrack for X2: X-Men and Fantastic Four), but this time had to reflect the essence of his noble character, so they came up the themes that reveal even more pomp, pathos, and atmospheric choirs than before. This is not what you call subtle, but does the job. - Elisabeth Vincentelli

Tom Welling takes flight as top choice for next Superman

wellingsuper.jpg
Actor Tom Welling is emerging as a favorite to play Superman in the next film.

Welling, 31, playing a teenage Clark Kent in Smallville on TV lived the first years of a superhero. The show is entering the eighth - and possibly final - season.

The late actor Christopher Reeve, who played what many consider the definitive first Superman film series, said Welling would be ideal to play the part of the screen.

Several new petitions supporting the idea and one poll named Welling as Superman's favorite actor.

For many, Welling embodies the character of Superman, for others, there is nothing more than a television actor. But with the Welling campaign momentum, many fans clearly believe he has super powers required for the role.

An online petition has 1,482 names calling for Tom Welling to become the next big screen Superman. But the big question is whether this will lead people to believe that the film was a direct continuation of Smallville.

With Warner Bros. has announced that the next Superman movie will certainly be a reboot, the debate has intensified over who will be the next star of the franchise - and the next director.

Obviously, a reboot means that Bryan Singer, Superman Returns, 2006, and Brandon Routh, who played the hero in this film would not return to the franchise.

jamescav.jpgManyonlinepollsandsuperherofanshavemissedthiscrucipoint.Itmakes no sense, like Bryan Singer on a survey of directors as possible, and no points, including Brandon Routh in a feasibility study for the next Superman.

Other polls have asked readers to vote for their favorite Superman. However, the vote on George Reeves, Christopher Reeve, Dean Cain and Brandon Routh - none of them will be back in the paper - is also unnecessary. George Reeves died in 1949, Christopher Reeve died in 2004, Cain is now 42 years, and Routh was disappointing in the film Superman before.

This type of survey are trapped in the past in the same way that Superman Returns ended up being a tribute to a bygone era previous Superman films. It really is time to move on. Nostalgic attachment to the supermen of yesterday is not helping someone to choose the man of tomorrow.

However, when we look at the polls, a blog on the Superman fans Showtime decided Welling in the lead with 47 percent of the vote, followed by Brandon Routh to 28 percent, Christopher Reeve, 24 percent Dean Cain, then with 1 per cent.

Apart from Welling, there are other options. Little-known television actor DJ Cotrone, 28, was due to play the role of Superman in the movie proposed (and now stalled) Justice League.

A selection of fans to the party leader is James Caviezel (pictured above left, who played Jesus in The Passion of Christ) who had the lead role in Superman Returns singer. Nicolas Cage was considered for the lead role in the film of the miserable life of Superman being developed in the period 1996-1997, and Ben Affleck was the preferred choice of scribe Kevin Smith projects. Josh Hartnett was offered the role of Superman in Superman vs. Batman project pilot, which began development in 2002.

Matt Damon mentioned the type of actor they are looking for, although he has never been faced with Warner list - or Batman or Superman roles - like Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, James Franco, Jude Law and Paul Walker.

In Superman: Flyby film that has become a trend, in 2002, but has never been done, Brett Ratner signed, and directly approached Hartnett and Jude Law is a key element. Christopher Reeve became a consultant for the project and the popular Tom Welling as the ideal choice for Superman, but Reeve has also added that the actor chosen is unknown. However, Wellington was at that stage still relatively rare, Smallville and begins about a year before.

vicweb.jpgKutchertestedfortherole,andherefused.PaulWalkerhasalso been offered the part, and David Boreanaz, Brendan Fraser and Matthew Bomer auditioned. Mutant X actor Victor Webster (right) made a screen test, which included costume fittings as Clark Kent and Superman.

And 'course, is support for Welling to be Superman - Christopher Reeve, even thought it was perfect. As I said before, Smallville has gone as far as possible without Clark Kent finally become iconic costume. Wellington is a great work for the chops Hollywood films remains to be seen - after seeing the remake of the Fog I am not entirely convinced.
